England Women’s boss Phil Neville believes his former side Manchester United are just one signing away from closing the gap on rivals Liverpool.
Jurgen Klopp’s side won their first Premier League title last week to take their tally of league titles to 19, putting them just one shy of United’s record 20.
United have failed to add to their tally since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013 and they’ve had a backseat in recent years as rivals Liverpool and Manchester City have dominated.
Nevertheless, United’s recent 14 match unbeaten run plus the signing of Bruno Fernandes has given supporters hope that they are starting to assemble the sort of side that could see them recapture former glories.
And Neville believes the club just be just one – and a maximum of two – signings away from ending their title wait.
Asked what United need to catch their rivals, Neville told Premier League Productions: ‘I think one more signing. You think of Liverpool signing Virgil van Dijk or Alisson in goal. I think one or [maybe] two more signings.
‘I think Paul Pogba plus a signing playing to their absolute best then United can get a lot closer. At centre-back, you look at the effect that Van Dijk has had.
‘Harry Maguire has had a big effect but I think another real strong centre-back. I still think they’ve got to be defensively sound. I think one more signing and United can challenge.’
Despite Neville’s call for defensive reinforcements, it’s midfield and attack that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is looking to strengthen this summer.
Jadon Sancho, the Dortmund winger, remains a priority target despite the Bundesliga club’s £120m valuation of the England star.
Jack Grealish is another key target, though his future and price tag is likely to be determined by Aston Villa’s final fixtures to determine if they can stay in the Premier League.
