Matt Hancock thanks ‘Daniel ‘ Rashford for free school meals campaign

Matt Hancock has this morning thanked Marcus Rashford for fighting to save children from starving during the summer school break, by calling him ‘Daniel’.

The health secretary appeared on Sky News this morning to discuss the latest breakthrough in coronavirus, fears over a potential second wave with lockdown lifting, and the decision to give the children of disadvantaged families meal vouchers throughout the summer months while the pandemic continues.

When asked about the massive U-turn made by the Government yesterday following a campaign led by Manchester United and England footballer Rashford, Mr Hancock told Sky News: ‘Righty ho, well I’ll tell you what happened, the Prime Minister talked to Daniel Rashford, he considered it and made his decision.

‘I think it’s terrific, I think it’s important we get as much support as possible to people who are in difficult circumstances, especially with coronavirus.’

He has been slammed on Twitter for forgetting the footballer’s name – but Rashford himself wasn’t too upset by the mistake. He tweeted: ‘I’ve been called much worse over the last couple of days.’

Boris Johnson congratulated Rashford for pressuring his Government into reverse the decision to cut free school meals over the summer holidays.

The PM thanked the striker for his impassioned campaign which has been credited with forcing the U-turn. It means children from lower-income households will continue to receive free meals under a new ‘Covid summer school fund’.
