There are dramatic scenes ahead in EastEnders as Whitney Dean’s (Shona McGarty) confusion over her feelings for Gray Atkins (Toby Alexander-Smith) lead her to try and kiss him. And, as Gray is derailed by this, a situation he previously had in control – he becomes convinced that wife Chantelle (Jessica Plummer) could be cheating on him.
And the chain of events leaves Gray more unstable than ever – which leads to him also becoming extremelty dangerous. And both Chantelle and Whitney could be in the firing line of the abuser.
Speaking to Metro.co.uk, Toby explained: ‘Gray is certainly caught off guard by Whitney – for him at this stage it’s strictly professional and it was not part of his plan when she goes in for a kiss.
‘Whitney massages his ego and it allows everyone around to see how wonderful he is, in his mind, but this move throws him off kilter, definitely.’
Another thing that wavers him is when Linda Carter (Kellie Bright) tells her that Whitney was hit by Lee during their marriage. Does this flag any guilt in Gray, who has been violent to his own wife for years?
Toby mused: ‘The knowledge that Lee hit Whitney, he does usually detach himself but this makes him feel uncomfortable, if only for a second. Another concern that comes up is he is aware that Whitney and Chantelle are friends so he fears them opening up together.
‘His paranoia is escalating rapidly – he would go to any lengths to keep Chantelle in check. He is very suspicious about what is happening with Kheerat. He has this self entitled attitude where he thinks whatever actions he takes is justified. Gray doesn’t like Chantelle working at the salon or speaking to anyone so this is the first time we have seen her get close to someone where Gray is part of that.
‘He thinks the worst and he jumps to conclusion – Kheerat is a very savvy bloke and he’s not far from clocking on that something is going on.’
EastEnders is about to go off air, leaving the story in limbo for a while but Toby can’t wait to return to play out the next chapter.
He shared: ‘I am very excited to go back – and I feel lucky to have that opportunity as a lot of actors don’t have that luxury. We are sticking with social distancing so that’s a new process for us to adopt – it will be the norm for quite a while so it’s a new skillset for us all to learn. But I am very excited to get going again.’
