Dr Hilary Jones insisted people are no longer questioning why they should wear face masks as more and more people use it as the norm amid the coronavirus pandemic.
The doctor appeared on Good Morning Britain to discuss the usefulness of wearing face masks on public transport as the government’s rules come into place on 15 June.
‘I think the current debate is moving from “why should we wear face masks?” to “why shouldn’t we?”,’ he said this morning.
‘With the mandatory need to wear face coverings on public transport coming in on Monday in England at least. I think the debate moves on to “why shouldn’t we wear one?”‘
The 66-year-old reminded viewers that the evidence is ‘still very slight’ but it shouldn’t mean people forget the importance of hand-washing and social distancing.
‘As long as it doesn’t change people’s behaviour about relaxing other rules like hand washing and social distancing,’ Dr Hilary added.
‘I think people still need to be careful about washing their hands before putting a mask on, they need to wash their hands when taking the mask off and make sure they don’t relax too much or get too near people just because they’re wearing something around their face.’
Meanwhile, the television doctor recently warned viewers how soon a second wave of Covid-19 could hit.
Joining Lorraine Kelly on yesterday’s episode of Good Morning Britain, he shared his predictions and stated that he doesn’t think the projected spike will be as bad as the first.
‘If we do see one I think it will be a less significant than the first, however, let’s hope we don’t have one at all,’ Dr Hilary said.
‘If that was going to happen when would that show itself do you think?’ Lorraine probed.
‘In the next two weeks,’ replied Dr Hilary frankly.
