Coronation Street may have pulled back on their planned stunt for the end of the year to mark the 60th anniversary but show boss Iain MacLeod has promised that there will still be some huge storylines to enjoy – and he hopes that viewers may even prefer the dominance of a community based storyline.

He argued that community is the basis of Coronation Street and it is a theme that we are all more akin with than ever before due to lockdown.

The planned stunt was due to be spectacular and time constraints mean that they can’t put together the ideas they had – especially as they don’t know what the COVID-19 climate will be by the time December comes around.

The producer explained to Metro.co.uk: ‘What we have had to strip out for our 60th is the Hollyowood spectacular elements as we didn’t have time to build and install what we had originally planned.

‘What we have discovered beneath the spectacular is a strong community story which has really resurged under lockdown. There’s a real sense of street community again now. We’ve got a huge human interest story which emerges from something on screen now which has been engaging. A classic salacious love triangle is also in there.

‘We have stripped away the crash, bang wallop but still have some unmissable storylines. If we lock down again, we will still have those episodes, it will just transmit later. But I am confident we can hit some classic Corrie episodes for the anniversary and Christmas.’

We can live without a big, all expense stunt for sure – so long as our Corrie favourites are on our screens and delivering the drama and the humour that the show has done so well for 60 years, fans will be happy.
