Yasmeen Nazir (Shelley King) is currently facing the prospect of a life behind bars in Coronation Street after she lashed out and attacked abusive husband Geoff Metcalfe (Ian Bartholomew), but it seems as if there’s more to come for her, as she begins to fight back.

The ITV serial drama has resumed production after it was forced to shut down amid the coronavirus pandemic, and Managing Director of Continuing Drama John Whiston has dropped something of a hint about what’s to come in the Yasmeen narrative.

When discussing how the soap will cope with filming on location now that health and safety protocols have been implemented in accordance with government guidelines, John said: ‘If there is something we might have done off site – say if we need a courtroom, which we might need to – we can just build one. I don’t think we’ll be claustrophobic.’

Such a comment could very much be in relation to Yasmeen’s future, as the character decided to plead not guilty to the attack on Geoff in scenes during the latest episode.

In recent scenes, Yasmeen seemingly started to realise that Alya’s (Sair Khan) claims about Geoff being an abuser aren’t as fictional as she once thought.

Yasmeen informed her granddaughter how Geoff tested her on a regular basis with the red crosses around the house, the excessive cleaning tasks, and the punishments he bestowed upon her if she failed said tests.

Alya then enquired if Yasmeen would deem this behaviour normal if Geoff had done all of this to a young Tim (Joe Duttine) — and Yasmeen was unable to answer.

Afterwards, Yasmeen took the stand, and — as the judge asked her how she was pleading, she thought about Geoff’s hurtful comments, before deciding to plead not guilty.

As a result of her entering a not guilty plea, a trial is an inevitability, so it’s likely that, if a courtroom is required, it will be for this particular storyline.

Coronation Street continues Wednesday 10 June at 7:30pm on ITV.
