Cop thrown to the ground and all witnesses do is film it and take selfies

An attack on police officers who stopped to help an apparent assault victim was condemned as ‘sickening, shocking and disgraceful’ by the Home Secretary last night.

Footage posted on social media shows one uniformed officer tackling a suspect to the ground in Hackney, north east London, before a number of others, including one who appears to be brandishing a baseball bat, swarm around him shouting and swearing.

Rather than coming to the PC’s aid, they can be seen aiming a number of punches and kicks at him. One even grins and dances for a selfie with the floored constable in the background, while others shove away a female officer who tries to intervene.

Tweeting after the incident, Priti Patel said: ‘Sickening, shocking & disgraceful. My thoughts are with the outstanding @metpoliceuk officers who were subject to this disgusting violent attack.’

Shocking footage, filmed by a nearby witness, shows five young men ganging up against two lone officers along Frampton Park Road in Hackney, London on Wednesday evening. In the clip, one of the men can be seen aggressively tackling an officer to the ground, pinning him down to the floor while placing his hand on his mouth. Some of the youngsters whipped out their phones to film the scene while others kicked the officer mercilessly in a vicious attack. Out of the blue, a female officer approached the scene screaming ???Get back!??? as she tried to ward off the attackers. However, the men retaliated and pushed the officer, ignoring her orders. One of the men even proceeded to film the scene and laugh away. The officer then pulled the attacker by his shirt and beat him with a baton several times to save her colleague, who continued wrestling the bloke. Meanwhile, the group of men kicked and pushed the officer despite her repeated orders for them to back away. Unable to maintain order, she sprayed the men with pepper spray in a bid to calm the chaos. The men were heard saying ???My eyes!??? as they covered their faces. At least 10 officers were called to the scene for back up, according to a witness video. The Metropolitan Police have been contacted for a statement. ENDS

John Apter, chairman of the Police Federation, said: ‘Horrific, stomach churning scenes.

‘Disgusting behaviour from those who attack the officers, those who film what’s going on and those who do nothing. They are cowards, the lot of them.’

Both officers suffered minor injuries in the incident, in Frampton Park Road at around 3.30pm on Wednesday, Scotland Yard said.

They had been flagged down by a member of the public who said they had been attacked and pointed them towards the suspects, a spokeswoman added.

‘My officers went to the assistance of a member of the public – who asked for their help – after stating that they had been assaulted. What happened next is a reminder of the risks our officers take whilst going about their duties.

‘It is fortunate that their injuries are not more serious. There is no place for this level of violence on our streets.’

Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, added: ‘I utterly condemn the disgraceful attack on two Metropolitan Police officers this afternoon.

‘These brave officers were doing their duty and assisting the public. We owe them a debt of gratitude and I wish them a full and speedy recovery.

‘Attacks on our police will not be tolerated. I urge anyone with information to come forward to ensure the perpetrators of this disgusting attack feel the full force of the law.’
