5 Seconds of Summer singer Michael Clifford has apologised for some of his past tweets which were offensive, insisting that he is a ‘different person now’.
A 5SOS fan dug up some of Michael’s historic tweets over the weekend in which the pop star is said to have made sexist and anti-gay comments.
The 24-year-old did not specify which remarks he was referring to but acknowledged he was wrong and issued an apology on Sunday (14 June).
‘Hi. I am so f–king sorry for all the dumb s–t I did when I was younger,’ Michael began.
‘I am a different person now with a much better understanding of the world. Some people have access to a digital megaphone a bit earlier than they should, unfortunately, I was one of them.’
He added: ‘I am so sorry for hurting anyone. It was never my intention. I was so naive and I am embarrassed and beyond sorry. I will continue to be better and I will continue to change. I never want to hurt anyone again.’
While some were clearly offended by Michael’s previous comments, the singer did receive a flood of support from fans who are willing to forgive and forget.
‘I’m not even a fan but when someone is apologising for something y’all need to support him. You don’t need to tell him that age is not an excuse or that’s not right way to apologise, it needs guts to apologise & accept their mistakes publicly,’ one said.
‘People act like influencers can’t make mistakes. They’re human too,’ another fan weighed in.
However, one wasn’t as satisfied with the apology and stated: ‘Michael could you please specify, please? Because gathering everything into one ball of mistakes isn’t genuine. Your actions took a toll on so many different communities and people. Its only right to see you understand where you went wrong, please [sic].’
Michael later returned to Twitter to address stories of an incident with a fan at a concert and insisted: ‘Holy s***. I am heartbroken to read these things that are being said – they are just BEYOND untrue.
‘I was never allowed in the crowd I only ever watched at front of house – and I would’ve never EVER done that. I would NEVER do anything like that. I’m so f***ing upset.’
5 Seconds of Summer released their latest album, Calm, in March and earned their second number one in the UK. However, the coronavirus pandemic halted their promotional plans.
